Maintenance and Generalization:

  • The goal is to ensure that the behavior is maintained, even when the specific strategies of reinforcement and prevention are no longer needed.
  • In order to maintain positive behavior, it is important to increase student independence and expectations as behavior improves.  
  • It is also important to generalize these positive behaviors to other environments, including the school, home, and community. It is important to consider how the BIP will address these various environments, in order to increase success for the child in life, not just during their school career.

Marin County SELPA commissioned Dominican University of California’s Department of Special Education to identify evidence-based behavioral practices to support students, teachers, and local schools. In particular, the task was to identify positive, evidence-based classroom practices leading to academic and behavioral success.
